FAQ's.
How long will it take me to learn?
The DSA (driving standards agency) state an average of 40 hours plus driving own car. I personally find it's usually a minimum of 30 for a complete beginner but everyone learns at a different rate and your tuition will be delivered to a level that meets your individual needs.
When can I drive my own/mum/dad's car?
We'll discuss this as part of your lesson progression, we'll both know when you are ready to drive without the 'safety net' of dual controls and without the full instruction you receive from a qualified instructor!!
When should I start learning for my theory test?
Why aren't you!!!!! If you are on the roads having lessons you should start to learn about road signs and road markings, the more of your theory you learn the better you will read the road and plan your drive more safely. Obviously I will help with this on every lesson but the more you can learn yourself the less it will cost you in the long run!
When can I start lessons?
You need to be 17 years old and have a provisional licence, you can apply for this before your 17th birthday and if it arrives in time you can book your first lesson for on the day. Please book at least two weeks in advance to guarentee getting the day you want.
What do I need to bring on my first lesson?
You need to bring BOTH parts of your provisoninal licence, the paper copy and photo id. Your lesson cannot go ahead with just the photocard as it does not show any endorsements you may have. You will be asked to show this and read a numberplate to check your eyesight, so if you require glasses... please ensure you have them. It's also important to tell me if you have any illnesses which may effect your driving or concentration so I can be prepared and ensure the lesson matches your needs.
How will I know that I'm ready to take my test?
You will feel confident when you drive and making decisions and also making very few mistakes... certainly no dangerous ones, and you should be able to complete all your manouveres without my help. I always carry out mock tests when I feel you are nearly ready, this helps you know what to expect under 'test conditions' and enables us both to clearly see any areas you need to refocus on.
What happens on the test?
We usually have an hours drive before the test time, this enables you to set the car up for you, settle in and settle your nerves. Once at the test centre you go out in my car with the examiner for approximately 40 minutes. You pay for a two hour lesson as from picking up to taking you back the car is in your use for two hours. You are asked to sign a form to confirm you are a UK resident and insured in my vehicle, you'll have to show BOTH parts of your licence.... if you don't have both parts... NO TEST!! You 'll have to read a number plate, same as your first lesson with me. If you are anxious about the test and feel having me there will help I will happily sit in the back, you must note though that I can play NO active part in the test at all, no words or encouragement, winks or smiles.... if I do your test will be halted and you lose your fee. I can be there for support only.
How do I know you are a good instructor to choose?
I am a qualified ADI, which means I have undertaken a serious of rigorous tests, not just on my driving and knowledge but on my ability to teach. As part of this process I am assessed regulary to see that my teaching still reaches the required standard. I also have regular criminal record checks done on me to make sure I'm a fit and worthy person to be teaching you. The evidence on this is the green licence in the front of my windscreen.
